Lent 2015: Reflections on the readings of the Easter Vigil

At the Easter Vigil, we set aside our lights and gather in the darkness to listen to nine readings - seven from the Old Testament, one from Paul's letter to the Romans, and a Gospel proclaiming the resurrection. The prayer that opens the readings enjoins us to listen to God’s Word with quiet hearts and to meditate on how God has moved within our history, from our very creation, to our redemption on the cross. The reflections here were written for CatholicPhilly's Lenten section in 2015.

1. Riven by Light:  Genesis 1:1-22 (Creation)
2. A Full Measure: Genesis 22:1-18 (Abraham and Isaac)
3. Rising Waters, Raising Walls:  Exodus 14:15-15:1 (Crossing the Red Sea)
4. Because I love you:  Isaiah 54:5-14 (I lay your pavements in carnelians...)
5. Sacred Rainstorms:  Isaiah 55:1-11 (Come to the water...)
6. Wisdom Walks Among UsBaruch 3:9-15, 32 and 4:4 (Wisdom)
7. A church warmed by mercy: Ezekiel 36:16-17a, 18-28 (I will give you new hearts, and put a new spirit within you)
